The Leefield Community, in partnership with REACH Edmonton, recently established a Leefield Safety Council to address concerns in the community. As a part of this initiative, the Neighbourhood Empowerment Team (NET) has been asked to support community safety initiatives.
NET works with residents, community, businesses, and organizations to build solutions to create safe and vibrant neighbourhoods and communities. The team responds to repeated or significant incidents that may impact the security and safety of Edmontonians across the city. NET achieves this by working with the community to address the factors that contribute to the issue, along with reducing the fear of crime and social disorder by using problem-solving approaches. NET is a partnership between the City of Edmonton, Edmonton Police Service, The Family Centre, and United Way of the Alberta Capital Region.
In addition, NET has a number of resources developed to help communities. One of these is the Neighbourhood Response Guide, which informs readers about what to do and who to call in case one witnesses a range of situations from vandalism, intoxication and substance abuse to property and business concerns. It also provides tangible steps to increase safety and minimize risk.
Another is the Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) Guide. The Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) booklet provides a quick and practical guide to steps Edmontonians can take to make their property safer.
Please feel free to connect with the Southeast Division NET Community Safety Liaison, Maggie Farbrother directly at [email protected] to ask questions, share input, and discuss the resources further. Also, please feel free to share this information with your neighbours and community.
